Have a question about joining Scouting or getting involved? The Katahdin Area Council serves youth across northern and eastern Maine and is here to help families, volunteers, and new Scouts every step of the way. Below are answers to the most common questions about programs, registration, activities, and volunteering.

Visit BeAScout.org and enter your ZIP code to locate Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, Exploring posts, or Sea Scout ships. You can also contact the council office for guidance. Contact KAC

  • Lions: Kindergarten
  • Cub Scouts: Grades 1–5
  • Scouts BSA: Ages 10–17
  • Venturing & Exploring: Ages 14–20 (or completion of 8th grade)

  • Sea Scouts: Ages 14–20

Visit your local unit! Meet the leaders, see how meetings work, and learn about activities and events. This includes Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, Exploring posts, and Sea Scout ships.

Register at your local unit or online at BeAScout.org. Fees apply, and financial assistance is available for families who need it.

No, volunteering isn’t required. However, parents are encouraged to help by leading a unit, supporting events, or mentoring youth. Every bit of involvement strengthens Scouting. Learn More

Scouts participate in outdoor adventures, STEM projects, camping, service projects, and leadership activities. Sea Scouts focus on boating, seamanship, and maritime skills. Youth in all programs earn badges, awards, and ranks as they learn new skills and grow.

Most units meet weekly during the school year. They may also hold weekend events, campouts, or service projects.

The BSA follows strict youth protection policies. Trained adults lead all activities, and safety rules are enforced for every meeting, outing, or camp.

Yes! Visit a unit to see meetings and activities in action. Many units offer “come and try” sessions for new Scouts.

Scouts meet at locations arranged by their units, such as school gyms, community centers, or outdoor sites. Sea Scout ships meet at docks, marinas, or other safe water-based locations.

Yes, youth can transfer between units if needed. Contact the council for assistance.

Uniforms are worn at meetings, campouts, and formal events to promote unity and belonging. Your unit leader can provide details on what is needed.
