Home High Adventure

High Adventure in Scouting is about challenge, discovery, and pushing beyond the ordinary. These experiences are designed for older youth who are ready to test their skills, explore new environments, and grow through adventure. Katahdin Area Council offers access to unforgettable high adventure opportunities—both here in Maine and through national Scouting programs across the country.

Maine High Adventure

Maine High Adventure is Katahdin Area Council’s premier wilderness experience. Scouts take part in multi-day canoeing and backcountry treks through the remote lakes, rivers, and forests of northern Maine. These guided adventures build confidence, teamwork, outdoor skills, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

National High Adventure Bases

Scouts in Katahdin Area Council can also participate in Scouting America’s nationally recognized high adventure bases. These programs provide unique environments, challenging activities, and unforgettable experiences that are not available anywhere else. Scouts participate through their units or via national registration, giving them access to some of the most exciting adventures in the country.

Philmont Scout Ranch (New Mexico)

Trek through the rugged mountains and vast wilderness of northern New Mexico. Scouts take multi-day backpacking expeditions, learn outdoor survival skills, and experience high-altitude adventure while exploring canyons, mesas, and historic landmarks.

Florida Sea Base (Florida Keys)

Sail, dive, and explore the open ocean in the Florida Keys. Scouts can participate in sailing expeditions, snorkeling, scuba diving, reef restoration projects, and marine science programs, all while learning teamwork and leadership on the water.

Summit Bechtel Reserve (West Virginia)

Engage in adventure sports and outdoor challenges at the site of the National Scout Jamboree. Scouts can try zip-lining, rock climbing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and high-ropes courses while learning leadership, teamwork, and resilience in a dynamic outdoor setting.

Northern Tier (Minnesota/Wisconsin)

Canoe through pristine lakes, rivers, and remote northern wilderness. Scouts develop paddling and wilderness navigation skills, camp along secluded shorelines, and explore forests, wildlife, and waterways rarely visited by others.

National Scout Jamboree

The National Scout Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brings together Scouts from across the country. This large-scale event features high-energy activities, outdoor adventure, hands-on STEM, and opportunities to meet Scouts from around the world—all in one unforgettable setting.

Camp Roosevelt

Camp Roosevelt offers classic summer camp experiences that help Scouts build outdoor skills, confidence, and independence. For many Scouts, summer camp is the first step toward future high adventure, providing the foundation needed for more challenging wilderness experiences.
